Research! Design with Fascinating Processes
Friday, 1 July ― Sunday, 28 August 2022

We are surrounded by many objects in our daily life.

As we browse the tables where they are displayed and sold, we choose things from the perspective of the user to bring them into our lives; we select things we like, things that are beautiful or useful.

However, what if each object started to tell us about the research and thought process behind it?

What would we notice and how would our lives change?

Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE), in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, is a design education institution known for its unique program that nurtures contemporary concepts and ways of thinking that overturn the traditional notion of “design”. DAE is attracting attention by producing creators who are bringing significant changes to the manufacturing process. So, what is this new “design” about?

This exhibition visualises new design horizons through the works of three groups of DAE graduates, young artists who are now attracting international attention: Christien Meindertsma, known as a pioneering artist who gives form to her research, Simón Ballen Botero, and Satomi Minoshima + Pauline Agustoni. What they have in common is a unique method: thorough research, asking fundamental questions about why we should create even more new objects in the present, and including the very process of developing projects as a part of their works. The works of these three artists, which fascinate us through their research and processes, may have the power to turn our curiosity towards things behind the “objects”, and transform the landscape, sensitivity and aesthetic awareness of everyday objects that we have through the eyes of simple ‘users’ until now.
