Existence in Either Realm
―Mitsuru Koga's Perspective

May 24 (Fri) ー June 30 (Sun), 2024
Venue |ATELIER MUJI GINZA

In our daily lives, we are surrounded by various “things.” While  continue worldwide, and consumption remains constant, there is also a growing movement towards mindful production that considers producers and the environment. This has led to various initiatives centered around “things.”

Mitsuru Koga creates his works by rediscovering the things and events present in our lives. Starting from observations of natural elements such as driftwood washed ashore, fallen stones, and leaves, his perspective extends to everyday life. From paper, cardboard, plastic, wire, and metal to tiles and bricks, his gaze towards both “natural” and “artificial” objects and materials encountered in daily life is equally applied, and they are incorporated into his artworks without distinction.

While MUJI expands its activities to encompass things, events, people, and society, it continues its pursuit of creating items that blend quietly into our lives, through trial and error with various materials and elements.
Through this exhibition, we hope to provide an opportunity to discover the perspectives embedded in craftsmanship, as well as small.

MESSAGE

In our everyday routines, we often overlook the things around us. However, when we suddenly take notice of the seemingly ordinary objects nearby, we realize that nothing is truly ordinary.
Each item holds a reason for being there, a story, and a flow. Everyday tools embody human wisdom and history, while nature encapsulates the Earth’s long history in its essence.

Yet, the trees, leaves, stones, coffee cups, and everything else present there, silently exist without any assertion, simply being there as if by magic.
They are neither particularly close nor especially distant, neither extraordinary nor entirely ordinary. It’s the richness of life found in things that are both and neither.

Artist, Born in 1980 in Kanagawa, Japan.
I live near the sea and create artworks inspired by everyday encounters.
My work is influenced by a variety of motifs found in daily life: rounded stones and driftwood shaped by waves on the beach, trees along paths and in parks, leaves from different plants, cardboard boxes from distant lands, and tin sheds in fields.Even without traveling far, there are fascinating things nearby that I explore through my art. I incorporate these discoveries into my daily creations, experiencing wonder along the way.
