Research!
Design with Fascinating Processes

July 1 (Fri) ー September 4 (Sun), 2022 *Period extended
Venue |ATELIER MUJI GINZA

We are surrounded by many objects in our daily life.
As we browse the tables where they are displayed and sold, we choose things from the perspective of the user to bring them into our lives; we select things we like, things that are beautiful or useful.
However, what if each object started to tell us about the research and thought process behind it?
What would we notice and how would our lives change?

Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE), in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, is a design education institution known for its unique program that nurtures contemporary concepts and ways of thinking that overturn the traditional notion of “design”. DAE is attracting attention by producing creators who are bringing significant changes to the manufacturing process. So, what is this new “design” about?

This exhibition visualises new design horizons through the works of three groups of DAE graduates, young artists who are now attracting international attention: Christien Meindertsma, known as a pioneering artist who gives form to her research, Simón Ballen Botero, and Satomi Minoshima + Pauline Agustoni. What they have in common is a unique method: thorough research, asking fundamental questions about why we should create even more new objects in the present, and including the very process of developing projects as a part of their works. The works of these three artists, which fascinate us through their research and processes, may have the power to turn our curiosity towards things behind the “objects”, and transform the landscape, sensitivity and aesthetic awareness of everyday objects that we have through the eyes of simple ‘users’ until now.

Planning Cooperation

Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE)

Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE) is one of the world’s leading design schools, recognised internationally for its forward-thinking and renowned professors and alumni. For over 70 years it has trained aspiring designers to make their mark on the future by thinking freely and openly about what design can achieve, consistently exploring design as an instrument of material, social, environmental and critical innovation. Today it is home to a community of many nationalities and cultures, offering an environment where personal perspectives on the world can be translated into meaningful and daring propositions. They are guided in this by a team of professional designers, architects, researchers, writers and curators, all active within the academy as well as in the professional field.

Christien Meindertsma

Christien Meindertsma(1980, Netherlands) thoroughly explores the life of products and raw materials in her work. In some instances, the result of her projects may be the record of a process itself. In others, her investigations lead to commercial products. Careful investigation and documentation, themes of local production and underexplored resources characterise her work. Meindertsma seeks to reveal processes that have become distant in industrialisation and encourage a deeper understanding of the materials and products that surround us. She won three Dutch Design Awards (2008) as well as an Index award (2009) for PIG 05049. The Flax Chair won the Dutch Design Award and Future Award (2016). Meindertsma graduated from the Eindhoven Design Academy in 2003.

Satomi Minoshima + Pauline Agustoni

Satomi Minoshima (1989, Japan) and Pauline Agustoni (1996, Switzerland) met during their studies at Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands. Allying Satomi’s sensitivity towards graphics and materials and Pauline’s hands-on approach and research skills, they developed a unique way of working that is based on understanding and expressing a subject from the inside.
The simultaneously raw and subtle expression of their research and findings into their original creations questions their audience and places gathered knowledge at the center.

Simón Ballen Botero

Simón Ballen Botero (1992, Republic of Colombia) is a Colombian product designer graduated from the Man and Wellbeing department at Design Academy Eindhoven. Although being trained as a designer, his practice is built in close relation with the fields of anthropology and material culture, through which he explores issues related to ecology, identity, heritage and colonialism. Simón works in collaboration with different artisans, craftsmen and communities, using design as a tool for critical discourse and empowerment. His work focuses on the use of local resources and local materials to create sustainable solutions. Simón is currently based between Amsterdam and Medellin.

Ryohei Yoshiyuki (Space design)

After working experiences at the design studio and projects in the Netherlands, he set up his product design studio “Ryohei Yoshiyuki to job” in Japan. He is exploring a proper form and color to design from observation and trials of making processes with materials. He graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven.
